Dewi Sri

A long time ago the leader of Gods and Goddesses Bhatara Guru, lived with his wife in paradise. They had a very beautiful daughter called Dewi Sri. They loved their daughter very much. This upset the other Gods. They were very jealous of Dewi Sri. The other Gods decided to poison Dewi Sri. They put poison in her food. Soon she became ill and died. Bhatara Guru and his wife were very sad, but they didn’t blame the other Gods. They gave Dewi Sri’s body to the earth but Bhatara Guru told to the people of the earth that they must look after Dewi Sri and she would give them much peace and happiness. Not long after, rice began to grow near Dewi Sri’s grave. The people remembered Bhatara Guru’s message and took the rice and planted it in their fields. Rice soon began one of the main staple food on the earth.
